Colombo Lions Club now known as the Lions Club of Colombo (Host) inaugurated in 1958 is the First Lions Club in Sri Lanka.

The first project successfully completed by this pioneering club was the introduction of the White Cane to assist the Blind with 500 White Canes being distributed to the Sight-impaired. More importantly, the club successfully lobbied for the enactment of legislation to make it an offence for motor traffic not to permit the safe passage of any person using a White Cane. The legislation was finally enacted on 13th February 1959 as part of the Motor Traffic Act No. 14 of 1951.

Later projects included the first Eye Bank in Sri Lanka, gifted to the National Eye Hospital in 1962. It was later supplemented by the Eye Bank of the Eye Donation Society organized by the late Lion Dr. Hudson Silva and developed into an internationally renowned Cornea Resource. Other early projects were the inauguration of a weekly Medical Clinic staffed by the doctor members of the Club, assisted by lay members.

The roster of projects completed by the club in  60 years of service runs into thousands.

Special mention must be made of our Sight for Thousand Project, Lions "Gift of Sight Hospital" Golden Anniversary project, chalet built at the Camilla Home, Hope for Children Cancer Project, 'Water Project' where pipe borne water is provded to villages in rural Sri Lanka and our long standing Sewing School Project.

In addition we support the longest standing Leo Club in the country, conduct large scale Health Camps support the efforts of those in need through our annual service activities.

We were awarded as the Most Outstanding Club in District 306A1 in our Diamond Jubilee year 2017/2018.

In 2018/ 2019 a member of our club was selected as the winner of the Global New Voices program in the marketing category and was awarded with a presidential medal by IP Lion Gudrun Yvandottier.

The Lions Club of Colombo (Host) continues to be a beacon of service to the community and looks back with pride  and satisfaction of the high regard the Lions Movement enjoys today in Sri Lanka while looking forward to meeting the needs of the changing landscape of service.
